SK-II Wonderland

Brief

The SK-II Wonderland project was the second iteration of Huge’s Smart Stores developed for the Skin Care brand. This project focused heavily on Mixed Reality content mixed with physical to create a delighting and yet technologically impressive experience. The project was deployed in Q4 of 2018 in the trendy Shibuya district of downtown Tokyo.

My Role

As a QA Lead on the Wonderland project I was able to leverage more of my previous experiences at Goo Technologies and DICE to help assess the quality of the Mixed Reality content and functionality. Since this was my second “phygital” project I was able to work even more effectively with the physical quality of the experience and how all the technology integrated into it.

Complication

While Huge owned the holistic experience, another agency “FakeLove” owned the Mixed Reality part, and they did not have their own Quality Assurance resource. I had to work across agencies to tackle issues that would negatively affect the user experience in the store without caring about who’s responsibility the issues found were. I pulled from my experiences at Spotify to coach both my own and the other agency to integration test the store before opening.

Resolution

The unique visuals of the store attracted a lot of attention from Japanese social media influencers and was an amazing success to transforming SK-II’s brand in Japan from an old 80’s skin care product to a fashionable, technology focused, and cool brand.
