Battlefield 3
Brief
In 2010 after finishing up my Bachelors Degree in Game Design I joined DICE as my first job after college. This AAA first person shooter was an ambitious project developed under a very aggressive timeline. The stakes were high as the competing title Call of Duty had established dominance in the market, Battlefield 3 was to be EA’s main title for Q4 2010.
My Role
I joined the project as a QA Tester but was quickly promoted into a QA Analyst role embedded in the team developing the Cooperative campaign for the game.
As an embedded QA Analyst it was my job to not only find technical issues, but also opportunities to improve the user experience.
Complication
This project still (as of 2020) is one of the most intense experiences I’ve had in terms of timeline, complexity and process. The game was very ambitious in scope and the complexity of that scope was tripled with the three platforms being supported, Windows, Xbox360 and Playstation 3. As the teams QA Analyst it fell on me to test and give feedback on the game on all three platforms as the teams were heads down creating all the content and scripting for the Coop Campaign.
Resolution
Me and my team were able to deliver a fully functional and thoroughly enjoyable Coop campaign on time for release of the game, and we got to improve the experience a lot with subsequent patches to the game. I will always regard this project as my “time in the trenches” and the learnings from it have been invaluable during my 10+ year career.
