Tinybop

Brief

The summer of 2016 I joined TinyBop as a Freelancer to help them in the release of major patches to their legacy games as well as the release of a brand new educational title.

My Role

As a freelancer at a small startup like TinyBop I took on the responsibility of testing and increasing quality for the products at hand, but also to help up-level the organization in general. I was able to bring learnings from big agile organizations like King and TV4, but also learnings from mistakes made at the big waterfall organizations like DICE. My role evolved into a mix of SCRUM Master, Release Manager, Project Manager, Product Owner, QA Lead and QA Analyst.

Complication

It was quickly revealed that Tinybops current QA process was not set up for tackling the task at hand. For example Tinybops “Infinite Arcade” title, with it’s many mechanics that can be placed and combined anywhere by the user, created an almost infinite complexity. I worked with the team to create a test-plan that prioritized the highest risk mechanics and combinations and pulled the whole company into an ambitious, but very very fruitful “internal alpha” testing effort. We then decided to release the patch as a Beta and crowd-source testing from Tinybops fans before rolling the patch out to 100% of users.

Resolution

Infinite Arcade and the other projects I worked on at Tinybop were released without issue and I stay in touch with the team to this day.
